CHILD MARRIAGE
It should have been in 1953-54,I was in Std VorVI.In the village where I lived was a Muslim girl my junior. That little girl got married one Sunday afternoon. In those good old days any event ,sad or happy, was was something anybody in the locality would partake. But this particular event roused particular curiosity for everybody in the area called it a " maiaz poupettte."Normally these functions, only the adults were invited. But for this particular event, even the children were out because the groom was an adolescent himself. But what made the event quite unique was that some musicians accompanied the groom on a procession from where he alighted from his car to the "salle verte "where the wedding would take place. And,again, there was music to accompany the newly married couple back to the car. vintage styled items to wear for cocktail party
Much later, two or three year ago,I was at the bus-stop when an old woman dressed in white came along and asked me how long would she have to wait for the bus.And this was the beginning of a nice bit of conversation. And I learnt that she was the same "poupette"who got married back in the early 50's.In fact, she still lived at his husband's place in Moka and had come to pay a visit to her brother and sisters who still live quite close to me.So many years have flown by!We have all turned grey and quite a few have already moved to another kingdom!
